Well this is a different post than I’m used to, and I’m unsure how to really get this started. For anyone who doesn’t regular the WGOM over at stickandballguy.com, ever week the members of that site are taking a internet road trip to one of the member’s personal sites. This week, yickit.com welcomes the WGOMers. Thanks for SBG for setting all of this up and walking me through the process.
The setup is pretty simple: SBG asks me 10 questions, and I ask him 10. We have a 50 word limit for our answers, which I think I mostly complied with, but then again I didn’t really count out every answer. I’m calling this Pepper with a twist.
SBG questions for Me:
1. We both went to high school in Fargo. I happen to love Fargo. Describe living there.
Growing up in Fargo is hard to describe. I wouldn’t have wanted to live anywhere else, but I don’t really feel like it fits me anymore. But I love visiting. Oh yeah, windy all the time and cold in the winter. Go Bruins!
2. What possessed you to go to law school, anyway?
Chicks, Money, Power, and Chicks1. Seriously, I’ve wanted to be a lawyer since I was 5-6 when my friend Eric and I decided to figure out what we wanted to do. He wanted to be a doctor, and is now in Med school. We must have hated fun. I like writing and solving puzzles.
3. Where do you hope to practice? What field?
Ideally I’d like to be closer to Fargo than DC. I really like the Twin Cities and hope to live there someday, but given the current legal market I’ll go where the jobs are. Don’t know what field I’ll end up in, but I liked Contracts, Criminal Law, Securities, Civil Trial Advocacy. Any field will do.
4. Seriously. How jealous are you of Andrew? First, Ireland, next Hawaii. Dude’s living large.
The dude is living large. Do they serve Guinness in Hawaii? You forgot to include Des Moines the greatest location of them all.
5. What got you into blogging?
I’m not really sure. I’ve always been somewhat of a computer addict and I knew the costs of hosting and WordPress were low, so even if I didn’t end up writing much or using my web space I wasn’t really going to lose anything. It worked out okay.
6. Ron Gardenhire. Explain.
I like Gardy. He is an interesting character though, I’m waiting for a FSN cialis commercial with him and is wife. I mean after that crap with the Coomer massage, what won’t they do? Sometimes his lineups/bp management bug me, but not too often. I’d keep him if I were in charge.
7. If you were a DJ at the WGOM, what would you play?
I’d probably throw in some: Modest Mouse, Fratellis, New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday, Dredg, Starting Line, The Academy Is, Finch, Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182, Rise Against, The Killers, Eric Church, The Clash.
8. Yickit? Where’d that come from?
It was a word I made up spontaneously either on a football trip or a debate trip. I can’t remember which, but I do remember thinking it was hilarious, and at least for me the joke has gone on for quite some time. I had other some others too: i.e. Abseck.
9. Solve the World’s Problems.
In 50 or fewer words? One person doesn’t solve the world’s problems. The only thing a person can do is to work change the problems they observe in their life. I’d like it if more people would forgo some luxuries and instead donate that money to needy causes. That’d probably help.
10. Send a message to the WGOMers. Fifty words. Go crazy.
Those of you with your own mom’s basement: keep on writing. It doesn’t really matter what you write about, I’ll at least read it. I’ve learned about a lot of subjects I never would have guessed by reading other citizen’s posts. And if anyone needs help or advice about setting up a site, I’m always willing to help.
My questions for SBG after the jump.
My questions to SBG:
1. Besides the Twins, what is the best part about living in the Twin Cities?
I have some family here, I love the summers here, and the winters aren’t so bad. Better than ND at least. It’s the closest big city to my parents, too.
2. Who has been hanging out at the WGOM for the longest time?
Andrew, for sure. He started reading about the first month. I would say that AMR has been around almost as long. Moss, too. But, I knew Moss for a long time before I started the site.
3. Do you have any bold predictions for the Timberwolves?
I think they’ll win 30 games this year. Not too bold, but I’ll add that Al Jefferson will make an amazing recovery and end up in the All-Star game.
4. Do you consider yourself an engineer who does lawyer stuff, or a lawyer who knows a lot about engineering?
A lawyer who knows some stuff about engineering. While there’s a lot of technical stuff in what I do, my job is primarily about law.
5. Are you sick of lawyer jokes yet?
I very rarely hear any. They don’t bother me at all. I suppose if I heard them all the time, I might get tired of them, but probably not.
6. What has the little one been up to lately?
Talking. TALKING! The girl is verbose. She’s testing how much she can get away with at bedtime. And she’s helping me work in the yard. She’s doing great.
7. Pick a trilogy: Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. Why?
LoTR. I don’t believe that George Lucas was involved. I’ve heard that LoTR is very good. Not my cup of tea, but I’d rather watch that than some space sci-fi movies.
8. How bad is the Bar Exam?
The experience is profoundly unfriendly. The pass rate is very high in Minnesota, so you should pass. I think the key is not to study too much. What? Well, again, the pass rate is pretty high. Just relax, do due diligence and you’ll be fine.
9. How long do you see Billy Smith running the show at Twins Front Office?
Good question. The Pohlads are patient. (Remember, Terry Ryan floundered for a long time.) However, this is a different situation. There are some big studs on this club. They should put a team around them. Billy should be on the hot seat.
10. Why is this called Pepper anyway? Any other new developments planned for the WGOM?
The original feature was named after the Pepper baseball game. It was a chance for me to go back and forth with other Twins bloggers. I don’t know what the future holds for the WGOM. Maybe a huge subscription fee? Just kidding.
Duh, I should have known #10, but I just couldn’t make the mental link. Have at it in the comments, and let me know if you have any problems. yickit {at} yickit.com.
- See Scrubs Season One, maybe episode 14 where Perry describes to doctor who couldn’t cut it why he became a doctor. ↩

1. Nice place! Whats for breakfast? I like bacon.
2. Where do you live in DC? (I lived there 1986-88)
3. What do you think of the Nationals new park?
4. Ever see politicians or "journalists" outside of their work? (I once saw Christopher Dodd chat up a woman at a used book store in Georgetown, he was known as a huge horn dog).
1. Mmm Bacon would be awesome.
2. I live in the Cleveland Park neighborhood in NW. We also lived for a year in Arlington, but we like being here a lot more.
3. I really like the Nats new park, there isn't a bad seat in the house and there is a lot of great food like Ben's Chilli Bowl and Five Guys. We usually spring for the cheapest seats and hang out at the center field bars.
4. Not so much, at least not outside of work. We did see Larry King walking around once, but other than that I can't remember seeing any of those types in their natural habitat.
I lived in Mount Pleasant for a while then right on Capital Hill, North Carolina Avenue. At the time (1986) Mount Pleasant was pretty dusty.
Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights have gone through a lot of changes even in the last year. I live right across Rock Creek Park from that area.
Mmm Bacon is currently up to 7th place in the WGOM fantasy baseball league… so, uh, don't call it a comeback.
Here's to the one who wears the "D"…Ok that's all of that song anyone knows I think.
It's funny you mention Hawaii. I asked my sister the other day about it and how she's considering going to Mankato State instead. Why on Earth would anyone do that?
Thats quite the variation. Hawaii is just like Mankato right?
Kind of like how Rickey Henderson is like Chone Figgins.
Kind of like how Garrett Jones is like Babe Ruth
http://games.espn.go.com/frontpage/baseball
both have haoles.
Bootsy? Can you answer that?
Yeah, more or less.
Thanks for playing along, Yickit! It took me a while figure out that "RT" was road trip and not Retweet.
I was wondering if that would be a problem. I enjoyed doing this, thanks; I think this format worked well.
I'll have a French-press with a little 2%, a glass of grapefruit juice and the Eggs Bennedict. Where are the restrooms?
Don't think I offered my congratulations on your recent marriage. (You are still married, right?)
In the back to the left. All this talk of food is making me hungry and I might have to solve that soon.
I'm still happily married. Thanks for the congrats; the post Wedding time period is way better than the Wedding planning period.
Hopefully, the post wedding time period is LONGER thant the wedding planning period! I will say this. Life becomes more complicated after marriage. That's not necessarily bad, it's just. True.
the post Wedding time period is way better than the Wedding planning period.
Heartily agreed.
I must have missed something somewhere. When did you get married, Yickit? (And belated congrats!)
Thanks. The stress just melted away after the big day. We got married on May 30th.
Me too. As it stands, it's just coffee–black.
I looked through the archives at my old blog, and it looks like the first reference I had to SBG's old blogspot digs was October 17, 2004.
You debated for Fargo? When did you graduate?
2003.
I was a Jefferson debater and graduated in '03 as well. That means you must be…..shit, I can't come up with any Fargo debaters from my year off the top of my head…..
Were you a policy or a Lincoln Douglas debater?
Policy, the only REAL debate
I was an LDer so our paths probably never crossed.
Come to think of it, I’m not sure we even had a Policy Team of ’03 people. Shanley had a couple and so did North. Our teams were four Sophomores.
dude, Cleveland Park. We are homies (two decades apart)!!! I lived up the hill about a block from the Cleveland Park library and Ireland's 4Ps. And Arlington! I lived in Rosslyn, a couple of blocks from a bar called the Quarterdeck and a couple of blocks from Arlington National Cemetary.
–bS
Great irish tunes at 4Ps. Good beer and food too.
A word about the format. Yickit and I had an e-mail exchange that had EXTREMELY long replies, which was fun for me, but would have resulted in about a 10000 word post by the end of it (at least). So, we resurrected the Pepper format instead and went with that. I hope to continue to do that with ROAD TRIPS in the future.
Don't you hate how a track from Dark Side of the Moon in shuffle mode gets totally disrupted instead of flowing into the next track on the CD? I HATE that.
I hate that…so I trimmed up my music player by not adding songs from continous album like Abbey Road (side 2) and DSotM
I removed all the track markers from Abbey Road (the whole album). Solved that problem immediately.
I've considered that, but the flipside is the shuffle is defeated for ~45 minutes. This stuff keeps me up at night…
What bands would the Nation like to see have their own "week" at the WGOM? And don't say the Stones.
Deerhoof
You read my mind. javascript:void(0);
Funny-lookin' smiley face…
What were you trying to do here?
Guided By Voices
there seems to be a decent amount of Weezer fans (judging from the Friday playlists)
Yeah, I made the suggestion that the Friday playlists would be a great place to cull ideas from and bS laughed me out of the joint.
yeah… if you did a Weezer, Radiohead, or U2 week, some of us might have a Mick Jagger sized meltdown when they get rated in the 6-7 range. I actually enjoy the more obscure videos of mainstream and any video from the obscure. I don't get out much.
whoever picks the videos could pick some 'deep cuts' from the artist. Sometimes those songs are better than the hits
It wasn't the 6s or 7s that got my goat, it was the 2s.
didn't mean that as a jab. my point is that if any of us toss a fav band in the mix, we would also be upset with the scores.
No offense taken, except for the 2s!
Yeah. It's much more fun for them to "educate" the masses.
what's a Friday playlist?
Flogging Molly/Dropkick Murphys
I agree on those too
The Nadas
I could definitely get behind a Nadas week.
Right now? Sonic Youth.
Of my music, could probably get to a decent whole week with Animal Collective, Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Bjork.
I would love an 'AMR's guide to electronica' week (I've already been turned onto The Knife, Coil, and The Field through the Friday 10).
Wilco
Drive-By Truckers
We did Wilco Week not too long ago. But another one would be OK too.
I would think an Iron Maiden or Judas Priest week would be basically awesome.
I think we need another polka week.
Maybe it's just me, but you've got too many damn bells and whistles around this joint. I find it disorienting. (Then again, I'm a Luddite.)
Sometimes less is more.
Yeah, the commenting system has its ups and downs. I wish it would handle html better but I like a lot of the other features more so I'm willing to make that sacrifice.
The blog of a guy I follow on Twitter because I met him on WGOM. WOOT!
Right back at you. Its really weird how links like that are made.
Hey yicket, I have drifted by from time to time, but never commented. I think I may commit to putting your site on my favorite list. I didn't realize how short a drive it is from WGOM to yicket.
oh… it's yickit, not yicket? Normally, that's way too far for me to drive and the traffic bites, but for a friend of WGOM I will cross the Red River and visit.
Thanks, that Red River can be treacherous
So if Yickit is a made-up word, what does it mean?
Also what is Abseck?
yickit was originally a small hut in India, but then I just started using it so often it lost that meaning for me.
abseck was a virtue a person innately has something like the Greek's veritas.
Abseck: what happens after you drink too much absinthe.
How long until these words show up on urbandictionary?
I hope not long, although I'd have to change the title to something like, Yickit: Its kinda almost a real word.
Anybody else wondering how long Billy Smith will be at the helm? I'm just starting to enjoy fake Bill Smith:
http://twitter.com/fakebillsmith
I saw a link to that twitter account last week on TwinkieTown. I'm also enjoying his posts
I enjoy Gardy's Twitter page much more.
For BrianS and Freealonzo, if you want to see some pictures of Cleveland Park and Columbia Heights from this summer:
http://yickit.com/tag/cleveland-park/
Nice pics. Taft Bridge? I think. I walked that one more than a few times.
So something I've wondered, but haven't bothered to look into until the day I actually need to go there; Does DC have any beer to call its own?
Hey yickit, just stopping by – thought I would leave my mark.
Thanks for stopping by, sounds like it was a rest stop . . .
