I really like to run in the rain, and so I just couldn’t help myself yesterday.  It wasn’t raining all that hard, so I brought my camera.  A couple of these picture might have some fog or water droplets in them, but here they are anyway:

Man, I wish The Hold Steady would come and play in DC. Crap. I was just checking out their show schedule and they played the 930 Club in August, how did I miss that? Oh well, I’ll catch them next time they’re coming through. Here is my random 10 for Friday October, 16th 2009:

I had never seen “Rebel Without a Cause” before, and I thought it was a pretty good movie.  Unfortunately near the end of the movie it began to rain, and a lot of people left.  We tried to stay, but there began to be a lot of lightening in the area which finally pushed us toward home.  Below are a few pictures I took at the event:

The crowd wasn’t too big around 7 o’clock probably because the temperature and humidity were still at oppressive levels.

The cartoon that plays before the movie might actually be my favorite part of Screen on the Green.  All movies should be preceded by an animated short.

A picture of the goofy dance that most people do right before the feature film begins.  I have no idea what it is called or when it originated.

Here is the best picture I was able to get of the movie playing with the Capitol building in the background.  Oh yeah, that is a giant head in the middle of the picture.

After almost not being held this year, Screen on the Green continues to be a very popular event here in DC.  Hopefully the event won’t have as much trouble finding sponsors next year.

Arlington has a similar event during the summer where they show 80’s movies, and Crystal City shows Superhero films.  We might have to try out one of the other outdoor movies in the area and compare the experiences.

The Baseball Game:

Walking into the park it appeared that there would be a lot of fans at the game.  The Nationals were playing the Atlanta Braves so there were tons of Braves fans here in DC for the game.  Once we actually got into the game there the ball park was probably 60% full, which is high for a team on pace for 100+ losses.  There are a lot more pictures after the jump.

The bullpen the new beer garden just out side of Nationals Park.  Unfortunately we did not have time to check it out, although I did notice that both beer and hot dogs are cheaper than inside the park.

The Nationals came back to win this game in the bottom of the eighth inning.  It was only the second win I’ve ever been to at Nationals Park.  I’m not sure who many games I’ve been to but their record is something like 2-17 when I’ve been at the park.

What is it?  The Arlington [ed. Virginia] Rap:

I think Remi nailed the Arlington Stereotype, although I think there are likely more than eight Starbucks in Arlington.  Hell, he didn’t even venture down to Crystal City or South Glebe.

Anyway I just thought I’d pass on a clip I know a lot of people around the District have already enjoyed.

Are there any other good “City Raps”?  Is this some sort of hilarious genre that actually exists?

The first picture is my favorite.  What a great way to hide an ugly parking ramp.  The second to last photo is a picture of a Twins flag which flies over the press box.

My streak of not witnessing a Nationals win in person continues.  I’ve lost count how many times the Nats have lost when I’ve been at the game. But I know how many they’ve once: 0.

At least the game was close, and Ryan Zimmerman hit a home run.

Yikes! I’m not sure whether or not single beers should be sold here in DC, but man after reading the story I wonder how effective and fair the law will be in its current form.  No one contacted, including those who helped to write the law, seems to know what to do, or how to apply the new law.

Just by chance I happened to buy a single beer yesterday at our local Cleveland Park Liquor Store, and I must say I would miss the opportunity to do so.  I love trying new beers.  And frankly, I’d rather not worry about having to buy a bunch of beer I may not like.  What better way is there to explore the world of beer, than to try it for yourself?  In order for that exploration to take place it must be cost effective, especially considering today’s economy.  The only way it can be cost effective for me is if I can purchase singles which are probably smaller than 70oz.  Hopefully the DC Council doesn’t decide to expand the new law beyond its current borders.

What do you think?  Should store owners be allowed to sell single beers?

I know absolutely nothing about Mary Wakefield.  Well I guess that is not entirely accurate.   I know these things largely thanks to the linked article:

1. Wakefield is from North Dakota;
2. She was trained as a nurse, and has her Ph.D. from the University of Texas;
3. She directs the Center for Rural Health at UND, where she is an expert on rural health;
4. She’s worked in Washington DC before in capacities including Chief of Staff for Sen. Kent Conrad;
5. She will oversee 7,000 community clinics.

Congratulations on your appointment Mrs. Wakefield.  I am convinced that what is good for North Dakota is good for me, so even though I would guess Mrs. Wakefield and I wouldn’t see eye to eye on every issue, I am confident she will do a  good job.

Clearly this is homer-ism, but hey I like seeing ND in the news and this will only give me another reason to post news stories about the greatest state admitted to the union in 1889.
