As Guillen is very well aware of, so do the Twins.
“They’re a better team than people think,” Guillen said. “Way better team. They got so many bullets to get you. I think their pitching staff, their starters hold on, they’re going to be a tough team to beat. Great defense. Good speed, their pitchers throw strikes.
“They have the best two hitters you’re going to see [in Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau]. I don’t want to say the best in the past 10 years because of Manny [Ramirez] and Papi [David Ortiz in their Boston days], but I’d rather pitch to Papi and those guys in their prime than pitch to those two kids.
“People forgot about [Jason] Kubel, [Michael] Cuddyer, [Delmon] Young. Just because they wear Minnesota Twins uniform, but they’re good. You got to admit it. They play well so many different ways. They put the ball in play, they execute well. What more can you ask of a team to play like that? That’s the reason every year they’re in the pennant race. When they’re not there, they’re fighting. Maybe I’m crazy or I look at it different way, but those guys are good.”

It is Nick Punto Day!

Fuzzy; At Best. After a couple of years of watching Punto play, I am still not sure what to make of him. It’s not as if I haven’t seen enough of his innings to make a judgement, he has been a Twins regular for a couple of years. Nick has a great glove, and a frustrating bat¹. His bat is frustrating because it lacks consistency. Sometimes its seems like he knows the strike zone well and can walk at will, other times he’ll pop out on a bunt. The problem being that you never know which Punto you’re going to get. When he’s at the plate, most fans don’t trust him, and who can blame them?

On the other hand, I’m a sucker for web gems. I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone who works harder to get on highlight reels than Punto. Some of the things he does in the field are amazing, and I think if push comes to shove, I’d choose watching a great defensive play over a great at bat. Punto provides more of the former, but for me thats okay because apparently I’m a sucker for fancy glove work. If Nick can somehow level out his hitting to become an average, or just below average hitter, I think he would be a lot more popular in Twins circles. But until that happens, I’m happy to watch him in the field, even if I have to change the channel during his at bats.

It’s not like Gardy is running Tol-Bot out there everyday . . . yet².

I reserve the right to change my mind after reading all the other Nick Punto Day Posts.

It would look really weird, and Mauer’s a good enough hitter that he may just render the whole thing moot by changing his swing and swatting balls to the right field corner, but I’d love to see a team give this a try. The current way of trying to get him out certainly isn’t working, and his batted ball profile is so unique that it almost demands a radical change in how you position your fielders when he’s at the plate.

BEST REGULAR-SEASON GAME: Twins-Tigers, Oct. 6, 2009
The beautiful thing about baseball is a great game doesn’t necessarily have to be a well-played game. The Twins-Tigers tiebreaker to decide the AL Central had blunders, errors, pickoffs and all sorts of confusion. But it was loaded with drama. The Tigers had a lead going into the bottom of the 10th inning. The Twins tied it up and had a chance to win, but Alexi Casilla was thrown out at the plate by Ryan Raburn. The Tigers had the bases loaded in the 12th but could not score. The Twins scored in the bottom of the 12th to win 6-5. Sometimes sloppy, sometimes brilliant, always exciting — that’s baseball at its best.
