    DC Blizzard 2010

    We ventured out over the weekend to see all of the snow in DC. We walked up Porter Street to Wisconsin Avenue and then ate at Z-Burger for lunch. Z-Burger was giving out $1 burgers if you knew the secret password “Snowburger.”  The meal was great, even if you don’t consider the price.  We took some photos on our walk.

    Well we haven’t received much more snow, but man has the wind picked up. This is the first real blizzard I’ve seen on the east coast. Visibility is low, although the video doesn’t really show it.

    Felonies!? Really?

    Felonies? I hope this is some sick joke;

    Va. students charged with felonies for snowball throwing

    Harrisonburg police say throwing snowballs at occupied vehicles isn’t a harmless prank.

    Two James Madison University students learned that lesson the hard way. Each faces a felony charge for throwing snowballs at a city snowplow and an unmarked police car.

    Harrisonburg Police Department spokeswoman Mary-Hope Vass says both 21-year-old students were charged Saturday with throwing missiles at occupied vehicles.

    Vass says any object thrown at a vehicle can result in the felony charge.

    From the WaPo : http://voices.washingtonpost.com/crime-scene/virginia/va-students-charged-with-felon.html

    How is this a good use of government power?  If anyone has better information please let someone know.

    Snowball’s are a harmful prank?  Show me the damages. Right now.

    I guess pulling a gun on snowball throwers is probably justified . . .

      Not that the gun pulling on U street is connected to the Harrisonburg events. I didn’t mean to imply that, other than to point out that without additional information, this seems to be an overextension of police power.

      True Dat. So, basically the kids had the bad luck to hit an unmarked police car, and the officers inside got angry. Ugh.

      i don’t know the whole story, but from what I understand at this time: yeah. Seems silly for a snowplow to be angry at that as well.

    Percent Chance Problems

    A ten to forty percent chance that DC gets more than 12 inches of snow? What does that even mean? Who gives a range when talking about percentages in this context?

    The National Weather Service has issued an updated Winter Storm Watch for another winter storm. The storm is currently forecast to arrive around 2-3PM Tuesday, and will last through Wednesday late afternoon. The updated forecast now calls for at least 8″ snow, with over 10″ quite possible. The NWS Storm Prediction Center currently shows a 10-40% chance of the storm generating over 12″. The D.C. Metro area is close to the south edge of this storm, so to some degree the storm totals will depend on the exact path of the storm. Temperatures will start near freezing, but will drop into the mid-upper 20’s during the storm. Wednesday high is 33-36. Winds will be 15-25 MPH with higher gusts. A Winter Storm Warning is highly likely to be issued later today. Please get emergency supplies before the storm strikes, as driving will become even more hazardous after the storm begins. Please also secure all loose objects on your property.
