    Felonies!? Really?

    Felonies? I hope this is some sick joke;

    Va. students charged with felonies for snowball throwing

    Harrisonburg police say throwing snowballs at occupied vehicles isn’t a harmless prank.

    Two James Madison University students learned that lesson the hard way. Each faces a felony charge for throwing snowballs at a city snowplow and an unmarked police car.

    Harrisonburg Police Department spokeswoman Mary-Hope Vass says both 21-year-old students were charged Saturday with throwing missiles at occupied vehicles.

    Vass says any object thrown at a vehicle can result in the felony charge.

    From the WaPo : http://voices.washingtonpost.com/crime-scene/virginia/va-students-charged-with-felon.html

    How is this a good use of government power?  If anyone has better information please let someone know.

    Snowball’s are a harmful prank?  Show me the damages. Right now.

    I guess pulling a gun on snowball throwers is probably justified . . .

      Not that the gun pulling on U street is connected to the Harrisonburg events. I didn’t mean to imply that, other than to point out that without additional information, this seems to be an overextension of police power.

      True Dat. So, basically the kids had the bad luck to hit an unmarked police car, and the officers inside got angry. Ugh.

      i don’t know the whole story, but from what I understand at this time: yeah. Seems silly for a snowplow to be angry at that as well.

    Snowmaggedon in Cleveland Park, DC

    Snowmaggedon continues in DC. Here are some pictures from the Cleveland Park neighborhood:

    This was definitely the first snowplow I’ve seen in DC since I’ve lived here. Seem like most of the stores were open, although the streets were really quiet.

    [Update:] Added some more pictures to the gallery above.

    OH NO! SnowmaggedonDC!

    Its going to snow in DC this weekend, and of course everything is about to go haywire. Here is an email I got from the Registar’s office of WCL:

    PROBABLE INCLEMENT WEATHER TOMORROW

    Weather forecasters predict 6-12 inches of snow for tomorrow, Saturday, December 19. WCL offices, including the Law School Registrar’s Office will be closed. Procedures for examinations have been changed as outlined below. With the exception of deferred and take-home examinations, no other activities are scheduled at the law school for Saturday.

    1. TAKE-HOME EXAMINATIONS

    Take-home examinations due on Saturday or Sunday should be submitted via e-mail to registrar@wcl.american.edu at the times they are due. Students may pick up these examinations today before 6:00PM or Monday, between 9:00AM and 5:00PM, at the WCL Registrar’s office. Please let us know if you will not be able to do so.

    2. DEFERRED EXAMINATIONS

    Deferred examinations scheduled for tomorrow are postponed until 11:00AM on Monday, December 21st.

    3. PAPERS

    Papers due on Saturday or Sunday (December 19 or 20) must be submitted on Monday, December 21st.

    Listed below are the resources that provide information on closings, cancellations, and delays.

    1. AU Information Line (202-885-1100)
    2. MY.WCL
    3. WCL Class Cancellation Line (202-274-4400
    4. WCL web site (http://www.wcl.american.edu/)

    * WAMU (88.5 FM)
    * WASH (97.1 FM)

    The all caps subject line was a nice touch. Overreaction? I think so. Is this the first time? Obviously not.

      #SnowmaggedonDC complete with Thunder Snow!: http://bit.ly/6CvyKf What is thunder snow? Thundering while snowing. Really? Yes, Really.

      In my opinion, that doesn’t seem all that scary. I mean Thunder doesn’t really hurt anyone anyway, so why is snow with thunder more dangerous?

      Here’s what we got:

      We apologize for the delay in getting back to you. We have been closely monitoring the forecast for tomorrow, and it was updated late this afternoon to predict a more significant snowfall starting early in the day. Given the current forecast, we have decided to cancel exam administration for tomorrow, Saturday, December 19, because of concerns for the safety of our students and staff.

      If you have not already picked up your take-home exam, please contact the Registrar’s Office at lawreg@law.georgetown.edu by 7:30 p.m. this evening to reschedule your take-home exam. The dates available for deferred exams are Monday, December 21, Tuesday, December 22, Wednesday, December 23, Monday, January 4, Tuesday, January 5, and Wednesday, January 6.

      If you have already picked up your take-home exam, you will be permitted to submit the take-home exam via the Online Exam/Paper Management System. Please follow the instructions below:

      The time limitations currently imposed on your exam will continue to apply (e.g., if your 48-hour exam is due by 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, it remains due by 1:00 p.m. on Saturday). Upload your completed exam to the Online Exam/Paper Management System within the time limit for the exam and no later than 6:30 p.m. Instructions for upload and for removal of any identifying metadata are provided below. The Registrar’s Office will print out your exam from the Online Exam/Paper Management System for delivery to your professor early next week. Please do not call or email to confirm receipt of your exam – the Registrar’s Office will be closed tomorrow.

      So basically, if you have a take-home out, you get the shaft. Otherwise, feel free to cut your break short to take your finals.

      I like your school’s system.

    DC Meets Winter, Decides They Can’t Be Friends

    My morning classes were canceled today much like classes throughout the DC area.  The culprit: Winter.  Welcome to winter Washington.  A lot of people are talking about this storm, and debating how bad it really is: for example.  Irrespective of how bad the weather is, take it from a guy from North Dakota: Clean off your freaking windows if you decide that you need to drive.  In other words, don’t be this idiot:

    [flickr]photo:3231732796(medium)[/flickr] [flickr]photo:3230876519(medium)[/flickr] [flickr]photo:3231727968(medium)[/flickr]

    I suppose I should mention that while I did take these pictures from my car, I was stopped when I actually took them.  Anyway, don’t be this doofus.  The roads are icy which means you need to be more aware of your surrounding rather than less so.

    While I know it is sometimes hard take 17 seconds to clear white fluffy snow off of your car in the morning [/snark], your safety as well as those around you requires that you do so.

    Welcome to Winter capitol city dwellers.  Be safe out there: Drive slower than normal and clear off of your windows.

    Can’t Drive Because of Snow? Fly Instead.

    It has been over a week since I left Fargo to head back to DC, but I wanted to share two pictures from my flight.  My flight was supposed to leave at 6 am CDT.  When I woke up at 4 in order to get ready there was a blizzard taking place outside of my window.  But the airlines had not delayed or canceled my flight.  After driving in a white out to the airport, this is what I saw once I arrived at my gate:

    Blizzard Flight 1

    And another look:

    Blizzard Flight 2

    The sheer amount of snow on the ground was ridiculous. I thought there was no way I would be leaving Fargo that day, but sure enough we boarded on time. And after the plane’s path was plowed we backed up, were de-iced and took off about twenty minutes late. My plane took off even after I almost wasn’t able to get to the airport by car. I haven’t decided if that was a good thing or not that we took off in spite of the weather.  But I guess I’m still around to write this, so I’ll lean toward good.

      The craziest part of that story is that you were only 20 minutes late taking off. Glad you made it back to DC in once piece.
