Yesterday my wife and I drove out the Shenandoah National Park to get out of the city for a while. We decided to hike the Sugarloaf Trial which is just shy of five miles. These are some of the pictures I took while we were out there. The best part of the whole trip was that while we were on the trail, we didn’t encounter another soul.

One of quite a few panoramic I took. It was pretty hot and hazy out and you could almost see the air in front of you. More pictures after after the break.

Part of the Appalachian Trail we took to get from the road to the trail we wanted to use.

The Appalachian trial was pretty well groomed, once we got off that trail and onto the actual Sugarloaf trail, the grass was much taller and the patch much narrower.

It was really cool to see the small towns and hills off in the distance.

As the trail went down into the valley the path was not as clear.

Some of the many rock formations along the trail.

I had never seen a red mushroom in person before, these things were growing all over the place.

We had to cross a couple of streams, none of which had bridges of course. Luckily the water was low enough so we could basically just walk over the stream on the rocks.

Another picture of the stream which flows down into the Pine Branch River.

The part of the stream we crossed over.

National Park Service and Department of the Interior marker we found along the trail. Global positioning without batteries.

This tree looked almost fake.

And we were back onto the Appalachian Trail.

And some pictures from the Vista just before the trail ended.

Looking north east.

Another vista looking South.

And one more time looking south.

Finally a look at some of the ferns growing in the park.
