When I was home for Thanksgiving, I snapped this picture of the new high school in Fargo. I think it is going to be called Davies High. I’m pretty sure that this looks like what people from around the country would imagine a North Dakota school to look like: a big building in the middle of the field. Well, they probably imagine snow too.

Gloomy October in DC

The weather here in DC this week has not been great. The sky has been overcast, and its been raining for what seems like days on end. But then again its been snowing in Fargo and much of the midwest already this year, so I shouldn’t complain. Speaking of Fargo, I guess The Hold Steady will be playing the Fargo Theater this weekend. Seriously. Great concert at an interesting venue for the low low price of $16. If you’re in Fargo you have no excuse not to go to this show. It’s not like you can enjoy the nice fall weather anymore.

Man, I wish The Hold Steady would come and play in DC. Crap. I was just checking out their show schedule and they played the 930 Club in August, how did I miss that? Oh well, I’ll catch them next time they’re coming through. Here is my random 10 for Friday October, 16th 2009:

Well this picture isn’t from a run or DC for that matter. Last week my parents hit a deer while on their way home from Jud, North Dakota. They were both fine, but their Ford Expedition was not:

The whereabouts of the deer are unknown at this time, but it must have been a large deer, even the radiator was completely destroyed. The truck had to be towed at least 20 miles to Jamestown, and my parent’s had to borrow a car to drive home to Fargo. Oh yeah, it happened on Father’s day so my dad probably would not call the 2009 iteration his favorite.

Anyway, I just thought the actual photo was mildly interesting.

ND in News for Breast Feeding Abuse?

Odd news out of Grand Forks, North Dakota rolled across my desk¹ this afternoon:

A North Dakota woman accused of breast-feeding her 6-week-old baby while drunk has pleaded guilty to child neglect. Stacey Anvarinia, 36, could face up to five years in prison when she’s sentenced on the felony charge in August.

I know I have a weird obsession with national news that comes out of North Dakota, but I just can’t help from posting this stuff.

I’m sure this situation with the drunk mom breast feeding her baby is a problem. Without knowing any of the pertinent facts, I can’t judge whether I think the mom should be prosecuted or not. I doubt she gets five years in prison for this though.

What an odd case. Take it to heart drinking mothers: You’ve been warned by North Dakota.

Get out of the news North Dakota.

Fargo Flood 2009: Part Six Blizzard

The water has come down quite a bit out on Cossette Drive, but the blizzard has come rolling in which makes for an interesting situation—well at least it makes for an interesting picture:

Remember, if you are driving near sandbags: Go Slow. We don’t want waves to wear down dikes protecting people’s homes. Stay safe out there.

UPDATE: My brother just sent me this picture of what it looks like to get to your house on a boat. Its hard to believe all of the ice in the flood waters. Looks like getting the boats close enough to dry land is becoming difficult because of that ice. But at least he’ll be able to get the pumps into the neighborhood.

Latest Photo from Cossette Drive:

Made it through the night. Everything seems to be holding up so far, and even though Round Hill and the rest of the surrounding area is evacuating I think my parents will stick it out. My brother picked up 8 more pumps for the house and for a couple of neighbors. He should be at Cossette Drive soon, although we’re not sure how many boat trips will be necessary to get everything there. I’ll update this post if I get any more information or photos.

As you can see, people are still fighting the flood and sandbagging out at Cossette Drive. I’ll post more pictures as they come into my inbox.

Here are a couple of pictures from this morning. The crest has been raised again in Fargo, but at this point I’m so out of the loop I don’t even know what that means. I do know that they are waiting for four more truckloads of sand out at my parent’s house.

Gawkers in Fargo Will Be Arrested

I’m going to put this simply. If you have time to sight see and get in the way of those trying to save their homes and businesses, you have time to sandbag and help in the effort. Start helping or get the hell out of the way. I applaud the Cass County Sheriff’s Office for arresting those who are getting in the way. Instead of jail though, they should be taken straight to sandbag central or where ever volunteers are needed. From the Forum:

Anyone who does not have a reason to be in the Heritage Hills-Oxbow corridor should stay away to avoid hampering rescue efforts.

Cass County Sheriff Paul D. Laney said sightseeing will not be tolerated and an arrest team will be patrolling the area. Anyone who does not have a reason to be in the area may be arrested. This does not pertain to residents coming to and from their homes in that area or members of the media.

Via Flood rescues underway, gawkers will be arrested | INFORUM | Fargo, ND. Becuse the information is extremely important here is the rescue information Forum’s report:

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Coast Guard is working on a number of rescues in the area of Heritage Hills and Oxbow, including the Butcher Block subdivision.

The area is in danger as water is rapidly rising. Residents in need of rescue should call the Emergency Operations Center at 476-4005.

Anyone who cannot communicate by phone or radio should place a red flag or red material in their picture window or front door so rescue crews can see them. Citizens are advised to remain calm and get to the highest point of their residence. Those rescued will be taken to the American Red Cross shelter in Oxbow.

FWIW: My parents live less than a half mile away from Heritage Hills.
