    Friday 10: September Eleventh

Haven’t done one of these in a while:

    1. Eve 6 – Eve 6: “Small Town Trap”
    2. Flogging Molly – Swagger: “The Worst Day Since Yesterday”
    3. Bowling for Soup – Drunk Enough to Dance: “Life After Lisa”
    4. Knockout – Punk Goes Pop: “Survivor”
    5. New Found Glory – Nothing Gold Can Stay: “Passing Time”
    6. Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better: “Well That Was Easy”
    7. Jason Aldean – Jason Aldean: “I Believe In Ghosts”

I was in NYC last weekend and it was hard to imagine what the Financial District was like before 9/11/01.  I was in class at the time and we just happened to be watching CNN at the time.  Hard to imagine that eight years have already gone by.

      Birthdays on Fridays are sweet…

      “Destiny” – Eric Woolfson, Freudiana

“1988 (Robert Fripp)” – Various Artists, Angels in the Architecture

“San Francisco 1906 (Excerpts)” – Synergy, The Jupiter Menace soundtrack

“The Floater” – Henry Mancini, The Music from Peter Gunn

“Never Ending Story” – Klaus Doldinger & Georgio Moroder, The Never Ending Story soundtrack

“Pipeline” – Alan Parsons Project, Ammonia Avenue

“Why Does the Sun Shine?” – They Might Be Giants, Severe Tire Damage

“America (bonus track – single)” – Yes, Close to the Edge

“Relay Breakdown” – Synergy, Electronic Realisations for an Electronic Orchestra

“A Miner” – Joe Hisaishi, Laputa: The Castle in the Sky soundtrack (Image Album)

regarding #3 & #9: we were big Synergy fans in college (still am); Synergy is Larry Fast, electronic keyboard pioneer. If you haven’t heard him as Synergy, you might have heard him playing keyboards on Peter Gabriel’s early albums & tours. His first LP Electronic Realisations is brilliant.

Friday 10: Last day of July

It always seems that the end of July coincides with the end of summer, even though there is little different between July and August.  I guess we ought to just celebrate the remnants of summer.  With that in mind, here are 10 random songs for July, 31st 2009:

    1. Kings of Leon – Only by the Night: “Use Somebody”
    2. Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better: “What You Meant”
    3. The Starting Line – Direction: “Birds”
    4. Green Day – Warning: “Church on Sunday
    5. Thursday – Full Collapse: “Cross Out the Eyes”
    6. Thursday – War All the Time: “Division St.”
    7. Dave Matthews – Some Devil: “Some Devil”
    8. Steve Miller Band – Steve Miller Band Live!: “Abracadabra”
    9. Guster – Parachute: “Scars & Stitches”
    10. OK Go – Oh No: “Here It Goes Again”

Warning is easily the Green Day album I’ve listen to most.  That cd didn’t come out of my car player for weeks.  “Cross Out the Eyes” is probably my favorite Thursday song, at least that I can think of off hand.  I need to revisit their albums still this summer.  Lo and behold, another Thursday song pops up next, funny how that works.  I’m not much of a Dave Matthews fan, but the music has its time and place I guess.  For some reason I much prefer Guster to DMB, but who knows why.

I think this list fits summer pretty well.  What’s on your list today?

Of all of Steve Miller's great hits, "Abracadabra" is his "biggest". Oh well.

Trying to get work done before (hopefully) heading off to trade in a clunker for a new car; here’s what’s popping up on the media player:

“Komm Susser Tod, Kom Sel’ge” – Gordian Knot, Gordian Knot

“Deadly Nightshade” – Brand X, Masques

      “Homecoming” – Yellowjackets, Samuria Samba

“Life’s Incredible Again” – Michael Giacchino, The Incredibles soundtrack

“Pixel Dream” – Ozric Tentacles, Live at the Pongmaster’s Ball

“Girls with Guns” – Tommy Shaw, Girls with Guns

“The Doomsday Machine/Goodbye Mr. Decker/Kirk Does It Again” – Fred Steiner, Star Trek TV soundntrack Vol. 1

“I Go to Rio” – Pablo Cruise, Worlds Away

“The Balance” – The Moody Blues, Question of Balance

“Dead Already” – Thomas Newman, American Beauty soundtrack

      Back to the grind!

Giving the Sountracks genre a whirl again…

"Reflections of Earth" – Disney, Walt Disney World Millenium Celebration

"Creation of Tron" – Wendy Carlos, Tron

"The Prophecy" – Howard Shore, The Fellowship of the Ring

"The Unsung War" – Keiko Kobayashi, ACE COMBAT 5: The Unsung War

"Vespertillo" – Hans Zimmer, Batman Begins

"Love's Dream" – Rick Wakeman, Lisztomania

"Kaonashi (No Face)" – Joe Hisaishi, Spirited Away

"Kids Return" – Joe Hisaishi, Kids Return

"Dream" – Brad Mehldau, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

"National Treasure Suite" – Trevor Rabin, National Treasure

trivia: Many don't realize this, but since video games can earn as much as (or more than) a mainstream movie, many of their soundtracks are as outstanding as their movie counterparts.

"The Prophecy" – Howard Shore, The Fellowship of the Ring:
I need to pick up the LOTR Soundtracks. We played some of the songs in band back in the day and it was awesome.

I have an unhealthy love of the Offspring. I know they have passed their prime (probably a while ago) and almost all their stuff sounds almost the same, but dammit, theirs was the first CD I owned and the album that got me into the rock/alternative genre that still dominates my playlists. That's my explanation for my completist approach to the Offspring discography. Unsurprisingly given all that – I like 'Million Miles Away'.

      Peephole – System of a Down – (self-titled)
You Make Me Feel Like a Whore – Everclear – Sparkle and Fade
Over and Out – Foo Fighters – In Your Honor
I’m Designer – Queens of the Stone Age – Era Vulgaris
South Bound Saurez – Led Zeppelin – In Through the Out Door
Till the Morning Comes – Neil Young – After the Gold Rush
      Shame – System of a Down & Wu-Tang Clan – Loud Rocks
      No. 13 Baby – Pixies – Doolittle
Good Times, Bad Times – Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin I
Far Pavilions – … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – The Century of Self

And I've got a couple Zeppelin tracks to tie in with yours.

        Nice.

I still listen to Americana all the way through a couple of times a month. They're definitely past their prime, but am a sucker for whatever they produce.

Friday 10 – The Bison NCAA Appearance Edition

The NDSU Bison basketball team will make their first NCAA Tournament appearance ever today and will do it in their FIRST year of eligibility!  Its been a great year for the Bison and I’m sure they’ll give Kansas everything they’ve got.  Go Bison!  Here is my ten for Friday, March 20th 2009, which I guess is in part dedicated to Thundar:

    1. Fall Out Boy – Fall Out Boy’s Evening Out with Your Girl: “The World’s Not Waiting (For Five Tired Boys in a Broken Down Van)”
    2. Fall Out Boy – Folie a Deux: “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes”NorthDakotaStateBison
    3. Patsy Cline – Classic Country: Early ‘60s: “I Fall to Pieces”
    4. Coldplay – Coldplay Unreleased: “See You Soon (acoustic)”
    5. Something Corporate – SoCo: “Pluck”
    6. Live – The Distance to Here: “Sparkle”
    7. Sum 41All Killer No Filler: “Handle This”
    8. Switchfoot – Oh! Gravity.: “Faust, Midas, And Myself”
    9. OK Go – Oh No: “Let It Rain
    10. Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better: “Evil and a Heathen”

Not really a rocking list which fits an athletic competition. But hey, when you’re not picking the songs, you don’t decide the mood.   Ben Woodside: OK Go says to “Let Make it Rain!”

The game starts at 12:30 EST.  Boo Kansas!

What’s on your list for today?
