    It is Nick Punto Day!

This image about sums up my view of Nick:

    Nick Punto

Fuzzy; At Best.  After a couple of years of watching Punto play, I am still not sure what to make of him.  It’s not as if I haven’t seen enough of his innings to make a judgement, he has been a Twins regular for a couple of years.  Nick has a great glove, and a frustrating bat1.  His bat is frustrating because it lacks consistency.  Sometimes its seems like he knows the strike zone well and can walk at will, other times he’ll pop out on a bunt. The problem being that you never know which Punto you’re going to get.  When he’s at the plate, most fans don’t trust him, and who can blame them?

On the other hand, I’m a sucker for web gems.  I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone who works harder to get on highlight reels than Punto.  Some of the things he does in the field are amazing, and I think if push comes to shove, I’d choose watching a great defensive play over a great at bat.  Punto provides more of the former, but for me thats okay because apparently I’m a sucker for fancy glove work.  If Nick can somehow level out his hitting to become an average, or just below average hitter, I think he would be a lot more popular in Twins circles.  But until that happens, I’m happy to watch him in the field, even if I have to change the channel during his at bats.

    It’s not like Gardy is running Tol-Bot out there everyday . . . yet2.

I reserve the right to change my mind after reading all the other Nick Punto Day Posts.

    1. I’ve blocked out his base running error from my memory.  You know which one I mean.  I won’t be able to rehash that play for quite some time.
    2. Seriously be thankful.

    BEST REGULAR-SEASON GAME: Twins-Tigers, Oct. 6, 2009
The beautiful thing about baseball is a great game doesn’t necessarily have to be a well-played game. The Twins-Tigers tiebreaker to decide the AL Central had blunders, errors, pickoffs and all sorts of confusion. But it was loaded with drama. The Tigers had a lead going into the bottom of the 10th inning. The Twins tied it up and had a chance to win, but Alexi Casilla was thrown out at the plate by Ryan Raburn. The Tigers had the bases loaded in the 12th but could not score. The Twins scored in the bottom of the 12th to win 6-5. Sometimes sloppy, sometimes brilliant, always exciting — that’s baseball at its best.

    Morneau and Nathan on Mauer

Justin Morneau and Joe Nathan answering questions about Joe Mauer during the 2009 All-Star:

Justin’s comment about welcoming Joe1 to the 4 strikeout club was probably my favorite.

    Mauer Pauer

Tonight is the 2009 Home Run Derby in St. Louis. The 2008 Derby winner Justin Morneau1 won’t be participating even though the derby organizers wanted both him and this guy to play:

Florida Spring Break Trip 2008 140Joe Mauer, who after missing the first month of a season due to injury, is on pace to have his best year ever.  In fact he’s already hit more home runs than any he’s hit in any other season.  And now he’s in the Home Run Derby for the first time representing the Minnesota Twins.

He may not win, but I’ll certainly be watching to see.  Time to hit some long balls Joe.  Show some Mauer Pauer at Busch Stadium.

    Reblog this post [with Zemanta]
    1. Yes, check the books.  While Josh Hamilton did put on a show, Justin was the one who actually won the competition, although you wouldn’t know that based on this years Derby Advertisements

I don't blame Justin for not wanting to take part. They took every opportunity to make it seem like he never took part during the run-up to this year, not even thinking about the "Jason" debacle of last year. I fully support him snubbing the event.

      • Yickit 8:00 am on July 14, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I also had no problem with Justin not participating. He looked like he was having a great time just watching too.

    Photo: Nick Markakis Balancing Act

I know this is a bit old, but ESPN has a great photo of Nick Markakis in an article on the Baltimore Orioles’s Outfielders:

Being at Camden Yard never seemed more exciting.  It would be even cooler if he could balance that chair while catching a fly ball or hitting and RBI double.  From Baltimore Orioles have an outfield of dreams – ESPN[photo by Amy McNulty/ESPN].
