ON a recent Thursday night in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, two D.J.’s— Shea Van Horn and Tommy Cornelis — were filling the basement lounge of Napoleon, a bistro, with French electro and house music. The occasion was a monthly party called Maison, and the room was packed: gay men in their 20s, a clutch of American University law students, a preening reality TV star (Paul Wharton) and Omar Popal, the 31-year-old owner of the upstairs restaurant.

    It is Nick Punto Day!

This image about sums up my view of Nick:

    Nick Punto

Fuzzy; At Best.  After a couple of years of watching Punto play, I am still not sure what to make of him.  It’s not as if I haven’t seen enough of his innings to make a judgement, he has been a Twins regular for a couple of years.  Nick has a great glove, and a frustrating bat1.  His bat is frustrating because it lacks consistency.  Sometimes its seems like he knows the strike zone well and can walk at will, other times he’ll pop out on a bunt. The problem being that you never know which Punto you’re going to get.  When he’s at the plate, most fans don’t trust him, and who can blame them?

On the other hand, I’m a sucker for web gems.  I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone who works harder to get on highlight reels than Punto.  Some of the things he does in the field are amazing, and I think if push comes to shove, I’d choose watching a great defensive play over a great at bat.  Punto provides more of the former, but for me thats okay because apparently I’m a sucker for fancy glove work.  If Nick can somehow level out his hitting to become an average, or just below average hitter, I think he would be a lot more popular in Twins circles.  But until that happens, I’m happy to watch him in the field, even if I have to change the channel during his at bats.

    It’s not like Gardy is running Tol-Bot out there everyday . . . yet2.

I reserve the right to change my mind after reading all the other Nick Punto Day Posts.

    1. I’ve blocked out his base running error from my memory.  You know which one I mean.  I won’t be able to rehash that play for quite some time.
    2. Seriously be thankful.

    DC Blizzard 2010

We ventured out over the weekend to see all of the snow in DC. We walked up Porter Street to Wisconsin Avenue and then ate at Z-Burger for lunch. Z-Burger was giving out $1 burgers if you knew the secret password “Snowburger.”  The meal was great, even if you don’t consider the price.  We took some photos on our walk.

Well we haven’t received much more snow, but man has the wind picked up. This is the first real blizzard I’ve seen on the east coast. Visibility is low, although the video doesn’t really show it.

    Felonies!? Really?

    Felonies? I hope this is some sick joke;

Va. students charged with felonies for snowball throwing

Harrisonburg police say throwing snowballs at occupied vehicles isn’t a harmless prank.

Two James Madison University students learned that lesson the hard way. Each faces a felony charge for throwing snowballs at a city snowplow and an unmarked police car.

Harrisonburg Police Department spokeswoman Mary-Hope Vass says both 21-year-old students were charged Saturday with throwing missiles at occupied vehicles.

Vass says any object thrown at a vehicle can result in the felony charge.

    From the WaPo : http://voices.washingtonpost.com/crime-scene/virginia/va-students-charged-with-felon.html

How is this a good use of government power?  If anyone has better information please let someone know.

Snowball’s are a harmful prank?  Show me the damages. Right now.

I guess pulling a gun on snowball throwers is probably justified . . .

    • eschapp 3:55 pm on February 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Not that the gun pulling on U street is connected to the Harrisonburg events. I didn’t mean to imply that, other than to point out that without additional information, this seems to be an overextension of police power.

True Dat. So, basically the kids had the bad luck to hit an unmarked police car, and the officers inside got angry. Ugh.

    • eschapp 4:03 pm on February 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

i don’t know the whole story, but from what I understand at this time: yeah. Seems silly for a snowplow to be angry at that as well.
