    Scrubs Accurate?

I was talking to one of my friends who is attending medical school and we got onto the subject of which of the major television medical shows was the most realistic. This conversation was sparked by the episode of Scrubs which we were watching. There are a lot of choices out there: Grey’s Anatomy, E.R., Scrubs and of course House; I had no idea which of the shows would be the most realistic, but I presumed that it would probably be either Grey’s or E.R. But apparently he contended that the most accurate show, at least when it comes to the treatment, care and medicine in hospitals, was actually Scrubs. Part of his argument is that it shows interns and residents as learning students who have to cover many patients a day. Also their medical lives are not abnormal, they are not geniuses who cure every patient, nor do they always know what to do. Possibly a comedy can me more realistic simply because the plot lines do not hinge on having relentless medical dramas that ultimately become more and more rare/unrealistic as the season finale gets closer. Not having a lot of expertise on this subject, I guess I’ll just have to watch the shows and decide for my self which one seems the most like a real life hospital.

No matter what level the realism is in Scrubs it is a comedy with deeper than ordinary character. The plot lines are well developed and the emotions conveyed to the audience are moving, and in the case of this comedy, that doesn’t always mean that you won’t feel sad during an episode (If you want proof see episode 74. My Cake from Scrubs’ Fourth Season where JD’s father dies). Check it out this show is too good to miss.

    Drake Relays 2007

RiggsThis week is Drake Relays here in Des Moines, hands down the most exciting time of the year.  Drake Relays begins with Street painting, where a street on campus is covered in murals, and ends with the relays themselves.  Drake Relays are the students favorite time of the year, there are thousands of people on campus and many great events taking place.  Below are some of the events whcih I encourage everyone to attend.

The first event worth mentioning is the 28th annual Drake Relays Beautiful Bulldog Contest.  This year the winner (pictured left) was a three year old bulldog named Riggs.  Riggs is owned by Cordell Miller of Prairie City, Iowa.  The winner of the contest serves as the official Drake University Mascot for the 98th Drake Relays.

Also on the Friday of Relays is the Court Avenue Celebration, which takes place from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. in downtown Des Moines. Ten bars and restaurants will participate in this party, with performances by Public Property, Phase Two, Floodplane, DJ Johnny Utah, Mr. Baber’s Neighbors, Yetti Blüz Band, DJ John Huffman, Betty Buzzkill with Spouse, Tom Thumb and Milkwar, among others. Bands will perform under a tent located just west of the Court Avenue Brewing Company and at High Life Lounge, Court Avenue Brewing Company, Royal Mile, Java Joe’s, Johnny’s Hall of Fame, Liar’s Club, Buzzard Billy’s, The Lift, Vaudeville Mews and Hessen Haus.  This event is one of my favorites every year, and a very popular event with college students and adults in the area.

Finally the Drake Relays themselves are great, every year there are many world class competitors including world record holders.  For more information visit http://www.drakerelays.org/ or call the Drake Ticket Office at 515-271-3791.

    Twins Bullpen Gets Noticed

    Pat Neshek

This week the Twins bullpen has been getting some well deserved attention in the media.  ESPN’s Jonah Keri wrote a great article featuring Pat Neshek (pictured above). The article titled “Neshek is king of eBay and the mound” is an interview with Neshek covering his baseball card collecting as well as his unique pitching motion.

Curt Schilling also mentions the Twins bullpen on his blog.  The post points out how nice it is to have a bullpen full of “closers” like the Twins and Angels.

The Twins bullpen has been one of the most dominant and consistent in the Major Leagues, and this positive lip service is well deserved.
