Yickit: Its not a word…yet

I’m currently participating in a survivor writing competition with some friends.  Basically each week we are given an assignment to write about and then judged.  Teams with low scores have to vote someone off of their team.  Last person writing wins.

Last week, which was the third week of the competition, we were told to write a letter of resignation for some figure, real or imagined.  I thought I would share my entry:

People of the Gulf,

The winds of change are upon us, and while you might question the timing of my departure, you should know that it is for the best. Because of all the spin put on my arrival and departure, I’m writing to you to clear the air.

You’ve relied on me the last couple of years for inspiration and a rallying point. Deepwater Horizon has changed that. I brought you a Super Bowl to New Orleans, but little did I know a new even wider area of the gulf would slip¹ into need.

I admit that mistakes were made, that I didn’t deal with this situation years ago to protect my own legacy. I had the chance to put an end to the rig in 2005, but I was too concerned with my own downward spiral into depression. I’ve blamed my action on the high pressure of my duties in the past, but today is the first day that I really realized the fire storm the pressure caused. The only way to calm the seas is for me to release this
pressure and step back.

Some might ask what I’ll be doing after I leave. I plan to spend more time with my husband Dennis, and our children, Alex, Bonnie, Colin. I hope to encourage my children to stay away from the public eye and instead spend their time at sea.

Fret not, I won’t make this hard on you and will leave without incident. I am officially retired.

The entries were assigned a score from each of the two judges.  For each of the judges there were one score of 8, two of 6, four of 4, five of 2 and seven of 1. My entry received an 6 from both judges, which I counted as a huge success after failing miserably on the first challenge.

Three weeks in and my team, VINDICTIVE VOICELESS VAGRANTS, has yet to lose a player.  Hopefully we can keep the streak going.
